Accurate measurements are essential for proper installation, smooth operation, and optimal light control. Before ordering your ShadesU Zebra Blinds, follow the instructions below.
1Choose your mounting style
Inside mount
A clean, built-in look
Inside mount blinds fit within the window frame for a streamlined appearance.
- Measure the inside width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Use the narrowest width measurement.
- Measure the height at the left, center, and right.
- Use the longest height measurement.
- Check the depth of the window frame before ordering.
Minimum installation depth: 2.7 inches (6.86 cm).
Outside mount
Maximum coverage & privacy
Outside mount shades install above or outside the window frame, offering broader coverage and reduced side light gaps.
- Measure the full width of the window opening.
- Add at least 4 inches to the total width (approximately 2 inches of overlap on each side).
- Measure from the mounting position to the intended bottom of the shade.
- Check that the mounting surface has adequate room for the brackets and headrail.
Recommended shade width: window width + at least 4 inches. Additional coverage is not automatically added to outside mount orders.
Important: ShadesU applies an automatic width deduction of approximately 0.2 inches (1/5 inch) for inside mount orders. Do not subtract this allowance yourself. The ordered width refers to the overall shade assembly, not the actual fabric width. The fabric is narrower to accommodate the operating mechanism.
2Understand fabric width deductions
The actual fabric is narrower than the ordered shade width because the headrail and operating components require space.
Standard single-mechanism
For widths up to approximately 78 inches, the fabric is typically about 1.37 inches narrower than the ordered width.
Wide shades with dual mechanisms
In the 80–90 inch range, a dual-mechanism system may be used. Additional internal components can increase the total fabric width difference to approximately 1.9–2 inches, depending on the configuration.
Example: an 84-inch-wide cordless shade may have an actual fabric width of approximately 82–82.1 inches.
Important for inside mount: wider shades may have more noticeable side gaps. For greater privacy and reduced light gaps, consider outside mounting with additional width overlap.
3Double-check before ordering
- Use a metal measuring tape and measure in inches.
- Measure width and height at three points.
- Verify the minimum inside-mount depth.
- Choose the mounting style before entering dimensions.
- Account for fabric deductions, especially on wide cordless shades.
- Review all dimensions before checkout.
Pro tip: outside mounting is often preferable when maximum privacy and light coverage are priorities.
